The Nitinol Mesh Wheel is a non-pneumatic airless tire system fabricated from Nickel-Titanium Shape Memory Alloy mesh with a polyurethane lugged tread layer, derived from NASA Spring Tire technology developed for lunar and planetary rover programs that could not afford a flat tire 238,000 miles from the nearest repair shop. The wheel contains no air. The wheel cannot go flat. The wheel will not go flat. These are not three ways of saying the same thing — the first is a material property, the second is a mechanical consequence, and the third is a commitment. The budget variant substitutes 48-spoke BMX 20/24 inch heavy-duty wheels with knobby tires, which are pneumatic, which can go flat, and which are not the Nitinol wheel but are available at the bike shop and cost considerably less than the Nitinol wheel, a fact the product team acknowledges without further comment.
